Proverbs 2
"4 If you seek her as silver, And search for her as [for] hidden treasures;”
We already know that “search” means to hide our own thoughts by testing the word received against the Word known but why “hidden treasure?”
God uses this word “treasure” in 2 Corinthians 4:7 in this way:
"7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.”
The answer to our question then is inside ourselves. Let us examine the breakdown;
Step 1: We receive the implanted Word of God in our hearts and we store it up so that when the time comes we are ready to use it
Step 2: Our intention must be that when we hear the word of God our ears prick up in order that we may apply what we hear
Step 3: Once we have heard, we pray to God for understanding and discernment of what we have read and heard on the inside.
Step 4: We ask God for exactly what we want- we want the 100% pure Word of God in this situation.
Step 5: We will hear more direction on the inside of us because that is where the treasure is- we make sure that what we hear brings us peace and matches the spirit of the Scriptures.
Once we have accomplished all of these steps, we will begin to see fruit. But what is that fruit?
Proverbs 2:5
"Then you will understand the fear of the LORD And find the knowledge of God.”
“Understand” here is the Hebrew word #995- “byin”- Interestingly it means to observe or to give heed to. What is striking about this word is first, the way in which it is pronounced in English- “Buy In” and that is exactly what it means. The understanding is that after we have completed all of the steps listed in verses 1-4, then the result will be our full immersion in the Word of God by hearing it and obeying it. Notice it says that we will understand- we will “buy in” and because we do, we will observe and give heed or listen to the fear of the Lord. It doesn’t really make sense for a person to “listen to or observe” fear… so it’s imperative that we understand that the “fear of the Lord” means obedience to the Lord…
Isaiah 11:1-2 describes the attributes of Jesus Christ and His Spirit. Since we are in Him and we have the same Spirit that He has then the attributes of the Spirit in Jesus are in us. To highlight just one of those attributes those with the Spirit of God have the Spirit of the fear of the Lord. {Isa 11:2} We already have within us the desire to obey God, usually though, we don’t know how to hear Him or what exactly to do. Proverbs 2 solves this issue for us with a precise road map through our hearts to God’s once we are in relationship with Him. Let us examine the second half of the verse at once:
The word “find” is# 4672- the Hebrew word- “Matsa” and its most applicable definition here refers to the state of being found in possession of. It also means to be found sufficient, to be enough, and to prove to be. In the ensuing verses of Proverbs 2- namely verses 6-8, we are told that it is God who knows everything, God who has all of the wisdom, God who knows every correct and prosperous path to take. That is what we are “found in possession of” when we complete the steps as prescribed in verses 1-4. But the blessings continue beyond this- as if this wasn’t enough!
Before we continue, it is timely to mention that I am absolutely not suggesting a legalistic approach to God or to receiving His blessing. He has already provided for us with the cross and blood of Jesus. However, God is not mocked, and He is also not in the habit of throwing pearls before swine. Therefore, we must have a desire that manifests through our earnestly seeking a more intimate relationship with Him. As it is written, “Draw near to Him and He will draw near to you.” {James 4:8}. ..To be continued….
