Light it up!!

Proverbs 6:23-

"23 For the commandment [is] a lamp, And the law a light; Reproofs of instruction [are] the way of life”

Very often, we have been told that when life corrects us using natural consequences, that it is God who is actually teaching us. I submit to you that based on the above verse that this understanding is absolutely false. Notice it says, “Reproofs of instruction are the way of life.”

This simply put means that the way life teaches you things is by proving what you have learned. For example, let us say that you are in a hurry to go somewhere and you make the choice to speed. You get pulled over and then you have a fine to pay. Paying the fine though means that you cannot pay one of your bills. This should be enough to teach you that speeding is not worth it. That is the point of the fine- it is meant to be a deterrent to poor decisions. This is how “life” works. “Life” will continue to turn out the same way for you until you learn the lessons it offers and make different choices. But “life” in this verse is different from God. Both in our study verse and in Psalm 119:105, we see that the commandment is a lamp and the law a light:

"105 NUN. Your word [is] a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.”

This means that God does not want us to grope about and constantly face the same struggles because we fail to learn the correct response. Instead, This verse avers that life- natural life on this earth- the human experience as it were will test what you have learned over and over until you learn what you need to survive. Thus, He has given us a tool to illuminate our path so that we don’t have to continuously experience difficulties to teach us to navigate and can light up our path to walk clearly, quickly and avoid snares. It is much better, much safer to have a light to navigate the darkness than it is to bump around until you figure out a clear path. This is what God wants- He wants us to choose to be wise enough to utilize what He tells us so that we can have and enjoy our lives!!
