Idol worship is hard work!

Genesis 3:17

“Then to Adam He said, ‘Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you saying you shall not eat of it: Cursed is the ground for your sake; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life.”

The curse pronounced upon Adam for his disobedience is so pregnant with meaning and impact for all of human existence, but we will deal with just one aspect thereof. That is when we listen to anyone’s words that go against what God has told us, we are automatically engaged in idol worship- and idol worship causes us to have to work for our sustenance. Heeding the voice of a person, including ourselves or our spouses when what they have suggested we do goes against what God told us to do or not to do means that our hearts are more loyal to that person than they are to God. If this were not the case, we would withstand the opposing action with all of our might and submit ourselves to God. The curse of bringing forth fruit after toil {although also actual} is metaphorically representative of the fact that idols are not capable of providing anything tangible for their worshipers and thus the worshiper is responsible for their own life. This is completely opposite of God. God wants to cause everything simply to work for us with no effort on our part beyond what God has told us is our part. Think of it, Adam had never “worked” in the garden before this day, and now he forced himself into laboring. When a person worships an idol, they have to “labor” to keep that idol appeased and that is against God. This side of the cross, God wants us to rest in His work and simply speak in order to bring the kingdom of heaven. Gone are the days when we are required to fulfill 631 commands in order to maintain our lives as in the Old Testament. Let this be a lesson unto you, that when you yield yourself to obey the words of anyone other than God, you become an idol worshiper and a slave to the one to whom you bend the knee.
