John 5:20
“For the Father loves the Son and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel.”
To love, to truly love is not a feeling. There are many “feelings” that result from the action of love- compassion, desire, jealousy, etc. But love itself is an action. Of course we know that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son- John 3:16 , but that is not all that God has done being provoked by love. Here in John 5:20 we see that it is the love that God has for Jesus that provokes Him to show Him all the things that He does. This is significant and impactful for us in the following ways.
First, I have already illustrated that God loved us and sent His son to die for us- therefore we are loved by God. The establishment of this point should and does assure us that since God is no respecter of persons and He loves us as He loves Jesus, then He shows us also all things that He Himself does. It is paramount that we remember that we have the mind of Christ, that the same mind that is in Jesus Christ is in us and so anything that God reveals to Jesus is likewise revealed to us!
Second, we can apply this type of action to our interpersonal relationships. We say we love our family members, our spouses, children, parents, etc., yet the tendency is to veil ourselves from them. We do this of course for self-preservation dominantly but this is not the heart of God. God’s type of intimacy, the type that is borne out of true love that doesn’t fail opens itself up to be destroyed! Think about it, God so loved the world that He sent His son- and the darkness did not receive Him because it loved its deeds done in the dark more than the light of Jesus. God completely set Himself up for His heart to be broken…. this is what we fear. We fear the pain of rejection and exploitation and thus we contain the actions that accompany love within ourselves.
Let me encourage you today that if you know that God loves you so that He shows all things to you that He Himself does then you can be sure that you know the will, heart, and path of God in any situation. Let me also encourage you that 1 John 3:23 says that we are to love others as Jesus gave us commandment and His commandment was that we love others as He loved us- Then if we say we love others, we will share with them what we ourselves do. We will not restrict our intimacy from them for fear of hurt because perfect love casts out fear!
