Proverbs 30:5 -
“Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him.”
Philippians 4:8-
"8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things [are] honest, whatsoever things [are] just, whatsoever things [are] pure, whatsoever things [are] lovely, whatsoever things [are] of good report; if [there be] any virtue, and if [there be] any praise, think on these things.”
When we think on things that are pure, we are protected, as with a shield. Thinking on things that are pure guards our minds which is imperative because as we think in our hearts, so are we.
In Psalm 91:4, the Lord uses the word “Shield”
“He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.”
and in the New Testament verse Ephesians 6:16
"16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one."
Although the word for “shield” in both of the above passages is not the same word used in Proverbs 30:5, the understanding is the same and is, in fact, holds a fuller meaning. In Psalm 91 we see that it is the truth of God’s word that is our shield. The word for shield there depicts a full body shield as opposed to the small buckler type of shield that is presented in Proverbs 30:5. Furthermore, the New Testament verse of Ephesians 6:16 connotes an action that the believer lift up the word that is the evidence for the thing as yet unseen when the attack of the wicked one comes. The end of the whole matter is that the Word is what we must think upon, the Word is what we must speak and in these two applications, we are found hiding behind the shield of God- His pure word.
